Ahsan H Mansoor to be named BB governor

Ahsan H Mansoor – a Bangladeshi economist and director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh – is to be appointed the governor of Bangladesh Bank, finance ministry sources say.

The decision will likely come at an advisory council meeting scheduled on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking to The Business Post, Mansur said he has received a phone call from the finance adviser in this regard, but has not received the appointment letter as yet.

Moreover, the government is also removing the age bar of maximum 67 years for the position of Bangladesh Bank governor.

To remove this age bar, a proposal to amend the Bangladesh bank order will be placed at Tuesday’s advisory council meeting,  confirmed a high level source at the Financial Institutions Division (FID) on condition of anonymity.

Senior officials involved with the matter pointed out that many countries in the world, including India and Sri Lanka, have no age limit for the post of central bank governors.

After approval of the advisory council, the FID will issue a presidential ordinance following approval of the president. The division will then issue an order for appointing a new Bangladesh Bank governor.
