Akhaura land port submerged
At least 10 villages and Akhaura land port have been flooded in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura upazila due to heavy rains and onrush of water from India.
A temporary bridge was also washed away due to the flood stopping traffic on Akhaura-Agartala road.
Local and administration sources said heavy rain started in Akhaura from Tuesday night. From Wednesday morning, water started entering at a rapid rate through the canal running along the side of the port. Following the flood, at least 10 villages including the port, Bautala, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, Saheb Nagar were flooded.
Md Jalal Uddin, Dakkhin union parishad chairman, said the flood water from indian started coming in at a rapid pace this morning. As a result, some villages were flooded and a temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road was broken. The entire port went under water.
Akhaura upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Gazala Parvin said that several villages were submerged in water. Locals have repaired part of the dam together. The Roads and Highways Department has been informed to repair the bridge. However, it will take time to make it usable.
