All garment factories resuming productions

Since the political change in the country, the workers of the garment industry have been protesting for various demands. They observed the strike by announcing programs step by step. However, the owners of RMG (Ready-made Garments) accepted the 18-point demand of the workers on Tuesday. As a result, all industrial factories have opened from Wednesday (September 25).

Most of the garment factories in Savar, Gazipur resumed production on Wednesday. Besides the police deployment for security reasons, there are army and BGB patrols in the factory area. Joining the workplace, the workers say that they protested for various demands as the prices of daily commodities have increased. Now they are happy due to meeting their demands. Hopefully, everyone can work peacefully now.

Earlier on Tuesday, a meeting was held between the employers and the workers in view of the ongoing labour demands at the Secretariat. However, Labour Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has “warned of strict action” if there is unrest.

After the fall of the Awami League government, labour protests began in factories in Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur in late August. They presented 18-point demands, including revision of the minimum wage and amendment of the labour act. However, the sector concerned has repeatedly mentioned “foreign instigation” in this protest. Besides, there was an assurance to accept the demands of the workers.

Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said that the owners have agreed to accept the demands “even though it is difficult”. If the workers have any demands, they are urged to negotiate with the owners without going to the streets. Labour leader Qutub Uddin Ahmed said that unrest should not be created whether there is any opportunity. We urge everyone to go back to work.

Labour Adviser warned despite this decision, attempts at disruption will not be tolerated. “The problem was resolved in the tripartite meeting. Other issues will also be resolved gradually. Workers are urged to return to work from Wednesday. Legal action will be taken if there is any non-cooperation from the employer-employee,” he said. Not only to accept the demand but also to withdraw all the cases against the workers centered around the minimum wage, the adviser also said.
