Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam – an Appellate Division judge – has been named as the acting chief justice of Bangladesh. Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter to the media on Saturday afternoon.

Ashfaqul Islam was born on July 15, 1959, in East Khalilpur village of Harirampur in Manikganj. His father AKM Nurul Islam was the former vice president of Bangladesh, and his mother Jahanara Arju was Ekushey Padak winning poet and writer.

Ashfaqul Islam completed his graduation and post-graduation in law from the Dhaka University.
