Hassan Ariff for holding pitha festivals to promote culinary tourism
Civil Aviation and Tourism adviser A F Hassan Ariff today laid emphasis on organizing Pitha festivals across the country to promote culinary tourism for both local and foreign tourists. He hoped that events like the Pitha festival would play a vital role in introducing these delicious traditional cakes to younger generations while preserving their cultural relevance.
The adviser was speaking after the inauguration of three-day 'Pitha Festival' organized by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation at the Tourism Cafeteria of the Bangladesh Secretariat. He said pithas are not just a culinary delight, they symbolize tradition, craftsmanship and celebration. He noted that pithas, an integral part of Bengali heritage, reflect a blend of culinary art, culture, and joyous festivity.
"Bengalis have been crafting delicious complementary foods alongside staple diets since ancient times, with pithas holding a unique place of prominence," he said, adding that these traditional delicacies are not merely food items but also markers of rural heritage and women's artisanal skills. However, he said, in the face of urbanization and the mechanized pace of life, the tradition of making and sharing pithas is gradually fading.
Hassan Ariff today said 'Pitha' (pastoral cake) is not merely a foodstuff rather, a symbol of heritage, joy and celebration. Food-loving Bengalese have been preparing many delicious dishes side by side their main meals since ancient times, he said, adding that among these, 'Pitha' has the utmost social importance.
'Pitha' is considered not only as a food but also as a testament to folk tradition and the artistic craftsmanship of womenfolk, he said. Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Nasreen Jahan, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Saima Shaheen Sultana and other officials from the ministry were present. The three-day festival offers visitors a chance to savor a variety of Pithas at affordable prices.
