Kaptai Lake water flows over danger level

Due to continuous flow upstream and rainfall in Rangamati, the water level of Kaptai Lake has increased again. As the lake's water level crosses the danger level, 16 spillway gates have been opened by two feet. Now 39 thousand cusecs of water is being released in Karnaphuli every second.

The spillway gates were opened by two feet from Saturday morning. Currently, the water level of Kaptai Lake is 108.82 MSL (Mean Sea Level). The maximum water capacity of the lake is 109 MSL.

Earlier, on Friday (August 30), the spillway gates were opened by one foot, but the water rose overnight.

ATM Abduzzah, Manager of Kaptai Hydro Power Station, said that the gates were opened by two feet due to the increase in water. 39 thousand cusecs of water is being discharged every second. Besides, 220 MW of electricity is being produced by keeping 5 units of the power plant operational. 32 thousand cusecs of water is released every second.

Meanwhile, the people of the lower areas of the lake are suffering as the water level of the lake is rising again. About 18,000 people have been trapped by water, the district administration said. It is also reported that 47 tons of food grains have been allocated for the water-stranded people.
