Demanding withdrawal of increased municipality tax, take effective measures to alleviate waterlogging, start Magura Textile Mill and create employment, the District Gono Committee held a rally in front of Magura Municipality on Tuesday. At the end of the meeting, a memorandum was presented to the Acting Municipality Mayor on various demands.

District Gono Committee Convener ATM Mohabbat Ali chaired the programme while Joint Convener educationist Kazi Nazrul Islam Feroze, former teacher of Govt Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy College Nazrul Islam and District Gono Committee Members Shamsunnahar Josna, Advocate Ahmed Hossain, Bazlur Karim Rakhu and Ashrafuzzam Shamim also addressed the rally. District Gono Committee Member Secretary Engineer Shampa Basu moderated the programme.

Speakers at the rally said, “Recently, the municipal tax in Magura Municipality has been increased several times compared to previous years. There is a complaint that the citizens are not receiving various municipality services despite paying the municipality tax. We don’t know why this tax has been increased without any discussion with the citizens and without any prior notice. No modern drainage system has been developed here. As a result, water accumulates in various areas even if there is little rain.”

They also said, “Unplanned urbanization is increasing, with no one to watch. There is no good management of garbage disposal in the town. The waste of various areas is dumped into the river and the river is polluted. The town lacks safe and hygienic public toilets for men and women. Street lights are missing or damaged in various areas. In many areas, the roads are broken, full of potholes, people are suffering. Mosquito repellents are not routinely administered in all areas. This enhanced municipality tax must be withdrawn immediately.”

The speakers further said, “One of the major problems in Magura District is unemployment. There is no such initiative to solve this crisis. There is almost no employment system in the district, there is no government industry here. Magura Textile Mill has been closed for many years. Magura is not a marginal area of the country. Magura to Dhaka and Mongla port connectivity is good. Magura produces good agricultural products including paddy and jute. There are several rivers including Nabaganga, Madhumati and Fatki. So why not set up an industrial plant in this district?”

The rally demanded immediate withdrawal of increased municipality tax, effective measures to alleviate waterlogging, creation of employment through opening of Magura Textile Mill and reduction in prices of daily commodities.
