Number of Tk 1cr deposit holders rises to 1,18,784
The number of depositors of Tk 1 crore or more has increased in the country's banks. In the last three months of the financial year 2023-24, deposits in 2,894 more bank accounts have passed Tk 1 crore. This means there were 118,784 bank accounts in total with more than Tk 1 crore in deposits, reports Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday.
According to the report of the central bank, at the end of the March quarter this year, there were 115,890 bank accounts with deposits of more than Tk 1 crore. At the end of June quarter, bank accounts of more than Tk 1 crore increased by 2,894 accounts to 118,784.
According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data, there were only 5 depositors with Tk 1 crore or more in the country in 1972 after independence. It increased to 47 in 1975, 98 in 1980, 943 in 1990, 2594 in 1996, 5162 in 2001, 8,887 in 2006 and 19,163 in 2008.
At the end of December 2020, the number of accounts worth Tk 1 crore or more stood at 93,890. Then in December 2021, it increased to 110, 976 and till December 2022 that number was 190,946. And at the end of June compared to the last March quarter, this number stood at about 119,000.
