The UN has pledged complete support to Bangladesh's Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced his full backing for the interim government's efforts to build an inclusive and thriving democracy in Bangladesh.
Secretary-General Guterres, in a letter to Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, underscored the UN's commitment to working closely with Dr. Yunus's administration and to providing aid through the UN Resident Coordinator and Country Team for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh.
The letter, shared by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing on Monday night, conveyed the UN's recognition of Dr Yunus' leadership role during the interim period.
Guterres extended his best wishes to Dr Yunus, who assumed the position of Chief Adviser on August 8, following the fall of the Awami League government.
"I welcome the efforts to restore peace in Bangladesh and to organize parliamentary elections," said Guterres, highlighting the significance of the current political transition.
Guterres said that Dr. Yunus' leadership during the interim period would play a crucial role in ending violence, ensuring accountability, restoring law and order, and paving the way for democratic elections.
He also expressed the hope that the interim government would undertake inclusive initiatives, considering the needs of youth, women, and minority and indigenous communities.
In his letter, the UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and protection of all citizens, particularly minorities. He also urged the interim government to ensure the well-being of Rohingya refugees, especially in light of the deteriorating situation in Myanmar.
Guterres remarked that Bangladesh stands at a critical juncture in its history, underscoring the importance of the interim government's actions during this transitional period.
The interim government was formed on August 8, following the ousting of the Awami League government on August 5 amid a popular uprising led by students and citizens. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India after her resignation. Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Dr Muhammad Yunus was then appointed as the Chief Adviser to lead the interim government.
